Two students play chess

In January 2017, RSBC merged with the Royal London Society for Blind People (RLSB). Although we are now called RSBC, there may be some references to RLSB in the following article.
An article from the 1950s about chess at Dorton…

Chess is a favourite pastime for the senior boys at Dorton. Other people are often surprised to find that blind people play chess, and it is not until they have seen the chess boards for the blind that they can understand how this is possible.

Alternate squareson the board are sunken and so it is possible to obtain a mental picture of the play by touch. There are blind people who can actually play well into a game by memory.
